Faith that pleases God.

Today's sermon was about this man, Enoch. He was the first of two individuals who never had to die physically to go to heaven.

Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

and also Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him.

He must have had great faith, in order for God to spare him death.
Apparently, we aren't told that he has this saving faith from the beginning: instead, we are told that he walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years... [ Genesis 5:22 ] so the turning point for Enoch was probably after his son Methuselah was born.

Methuselah means "When he dies, it shall come". What's the "it"? Judgement. God's judgement on the sins of the world.

Genesis 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

I'm sure you're all familiar with the story of Noah. God told him to build an ark because he was going to flood the earth.  Well, the year Methuselah died was the year of the Great Flood.
As Enoch was warned of the impending judgement on the people of the world, he no longer walked the way of the world and turned to God instead.

Jude
14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

Though Enoch never saw the flood, or actually lived long enough on the earth to witness firsthand God's judgement and punishment meted out on mankind, he had faith in God's words, and acted accordingly. Also probably because he didn't know when his son would die.

So that's Enoch. Why should I walk with God?
Like Enoch, we live in the midst of a very sinful world. How can we escape the wrath of God? By turning away from the ways of the world and walking with God.

Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

This morning, the preacher mentioned the Theory of Evolution and how, unlike Enoch's time, this deception has kept millions from the saving faith of the gospel; indeed, from the very belief in the existence of God. [ Jude 15 "...hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him." ]

To such people, the only fate that awaits them is death - physical, spiritual and eternal.

Psalms 19:1-3 says:
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

God's existence and goodness can be seen in nature, and He is always willing to bestow blessings and reward those who come to Him in faith.

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

King David said in Psalms 63:1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

I asked myself: Do I, like King David, long for God as a thirsty person in a desert?

Walking with God is not an easy thing. More often than not it is a very steep, uphill task. When we are surrounded more and more by the vices and temptations and pleasures that the world has to offer, it gets very hard at times to keep to the straight and narrow path.
For me, though I have tried and failed innumerable times, the gains still outweigh the losses.

Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

We could never find true peace or rest except in God.

Jeremiah 29:11-14a
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
14 And I will be found of you, saith the LORD:

And this is why: because that is what we were created for.

Revelations 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

We were created for God's pleasure and how do we give Him pleasure? By our faith in Him.

Hebrews 11:5-6
5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Enoch was taken perhaps to spare him persecution from the ungodly world that he had to endure as a result of his bold preaching.
We are told that Enoch walked with God three hundred years  before being translated [Genesis 5:22] . That's certainly no mean feat.

As for us, at Christ's second coming, if we are still living, we will also be taken up.
In the meantime, we have to cultivate a faith that 1 pleases God, 2 enables us to walk with Him and 3 enables us to serve Him effectively.

I wonder if I have ceased to walk the way of the world, and begun to walk with God?

I am resolved to go to the Saviour,
Leaving my sin and strife;
He is the true One,
He is the just One,
He hath the words of life.

I am resolved to follow the Saviour,
Faithful and true each day;
Heed what He sayeth,
Do what He willeth,
He is the living Way.

the Lord is at hand

[ Philippians 4:5 ]

Hi. My trip was good. Sorry I hadn't found much to blog about so I haven't until now.

Here is something I found from one of the sermons preached at my church -

When you praise the Lord, you will soon realise how much greater He is than all the difficulties and problems that may plague your life. When you praise the Lord, you will also realise that He is in sovereign control of all the circumstances of your life.
A few weeks ago someone sent me an SMS message that read like this: "In times of difficulties don't ever say, 'God, I have a big problem.' But instead, say, 'Hey problem, I have a big God!' "

I think that's quite true. Most of the time we tend to focus on the problem and pity ourselves. It's almost like resigning ourselves to our "fate" and not trusting that God has the best in mind for us. :)

John 16:33 says
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Tida I heard from In that you're taking Chinese lessons? How is it so far? I'm trying to find a day to fly to Bangkok and see you but it's proving to be very difficult. School starts next Monday for me, and there's alot of things I have to do this week. Guess I will see you when you come back here to collect your cert. By the way, if you collect after 12 July you have to pay $10.

Rita, I got your sms this morning when I woke up. How are you feeling? I replied you - I hope I sent to the right number! I can't say I know how it is to feel scared that your life is in mortal danger because I haven't really been in that type of situation. But I hope you will be okay and I'm praying for you yeah? And I'm praying that you will find comfort and assurance in our Almighty God.

Albert I know you're back but you're not blogging either :P I ended up not going to the lunch thing. Heh. Don't know how it went in the end.

Just an update for you girls: I got into Monash University. I'm going to be doing a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Communications and minoring in Psychology. It's an offshore course so that means I go to this centre which is located at Capitol Building and I have my lectures and tutorials there.
Anyway, my semester is going to start on Monday (19 July) with orientation at 2pm. I think I'm going to have to skip piano for that. Hmm.
I'm kind of apprehensive and yet a little excited. I mean, it's something new. Like going to ACJC for the first time. Though of course it'll be different. But everything's so unknown. That's why it's kinda scary. And I have to make new friends. :|

Ahh I miss you guys can you just come back now!

Okay. That was out of point. I was thinking that since I only have to go to school four days a week, I would go help out at one of the BASC (Before and After School Care) Centre that my church runs for kids. I met some really cute kids from the VBS (Vacation Bible School) and I'm thinking since I enjoyed myself so much at VBS I might as well use my free day to help at BASC. I'll have to get my schedules first though. And then decide which centre.
So many decisions, so little time.

Guess that's my update for now.
Tida, hope to hear from you soon... Rita, take care okay! I'll be praying for you and your family.
Albert - let's meet up soon before my school starts.

The Haven of Rest
Words: Henry L. Gilmour (1836-1920)
Music: George D. Moore
Midi can be found here.

My soul in sad exile was out on life's sea,
So burdened with sin and distressed
Till I heard a sweet voice saying,
"Make Me your choice!"
And I entered the Haven of Rest!

I yielded myself to His tender embrace,
In faith taking hold of the Word,
My fetters fell off, and I anchored my soul;
The "Haven of Rest" is my Lord.

The song of my soul, since the Lord made me whole,
Has been the old story so blest,
Of Jesus, Who'll save whosoever will have
A home in the Haven of Rest.

How precious the thought that we all may recline,
Like John, the beloved so blest,
On Jesus' strong arm, where no tempest can harm,
Secure in the Haven of Rest.

O come to the Savior, He patiently waits
To save by His power divine;
Come, anchor your soul in the Haven of Rest,
And say, "My Beloved is mine."

I've anchored my soul in the Haven of Rest,
I'll sail the wide seas no more;
The tempest may sweep over wild, stormy, deep,
In Jesus I'm safe evermore.

Romans 8:35-39
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
